Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for hours when numerous of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that these practices become unprofitable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
