The fast bowler Poised for a Major Role in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chief selector Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches set to start on the 21st of November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about his chances of participating.

"It's clear that time is getting short and multiple considerations involved, aside from his injury, but additional elements," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a major part. With luck from the opening match. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

He has a history of back injuries, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from several home seasons in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to make the squad for the contest.

He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and stated that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs in any case. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for a short period, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
