The Himalayan nation's Political Scene Witnesses Major Partnership Forged By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Political Consultations Taking Place

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several major political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a collective duty. The message reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
